Liz Kihslinger Inner Fire Yogi since August 2019

My first experience with yoga was a VHS tape I bought with my employee discount while working at Sam Goody. I took it home, popped it into the basement VCR of my childhood home, and apparently set the wheels in motion for a lifelong love affair with yoga.

Fast forward a few (cough) years to 2012, when I discovered hot yoga at my neighborhood studio in Seattle. I had just had my first child and desperately needed two things: movement and time alone. Like many of us in this community, I was immediately hooked. So hooked, in fact, that when my OB told me I couldn’t practice hot yoga while pregnant with my second child, I found a new midwife who would allow it. And let me tell you, the hot yoga baby came out way spicier than the other one.

“The biggest gift yoga has given me, though, is learning that I don’t have to be perfect.”

As a musician, I used to be terrified of anyone hearing me practice and make mistakes. I worried they would think less of me. Yoga taught me that showing up, wobbling, falling out of a pose, and making mistakes is exactly how we learn and grow. And there’s something beautiful about embracing that process. I probably don’t need to tell you that life was much more miserable before I figured that out!

After moving back to Wisconsin in 2017, it took me three studios before finding my yoga home at Inner Fire Yoga. I love the heat of the sequenced classes (and would love hotter flow classes!), but nothing beats Brad’s playlists and creative flows. The music, movement, heat, and community keep me coming back—and remind me that the practice was never about perfection. It’s about showing up, breathing, and enjoying the ride.
