Estelle Higgins
Receptionist since Dec. 2025My yoga practice has been shaped by physical, mental, and relational experiences. I first tried yoga during undergrad at the University of Chicago, but never developed a consistent practice because I was always “too busy” studying, working, and worrying. Studying psychology and neuroscience, with a focus on mind-body connections and interventions, I have long recognized the benefits of mind-body practices on mental and physical wellbeing—but often struggle to apply them to my own life.
The Inner Fire Yoga community and my mat have offered a place to land during both steady and uncertain times. After moving back to Madison during the pandemic and starting grad school, I found Inner Fire in 2023 on the heels of physical illness and emotional loss. The studio’s welcoming, warm (literally!) energy felt both grounding and energizing; the intense heat both offered comfort and pushed me to explore my mental and physical limits. Through reconnecting with my breath and body, I found space for release, healing, and presence. The lessons I continue to learn on my mat—from steadiness and flexibility to compassion and authenticity—also shape my values and the way I move through the world. I try to lead with my heart both on and off the mat.
As a PhD student and someone who has often defined my identity through academia, rigor and discipline have shaped much of my life. Practicing yoga gives me a chance to embrace curiosity, learn how to find structure and rigor without rigidity, and seek discipline and challenge without judgment. It continues to teach me to learn from and trust my body’s wisdom.
Above all, the steady, supportive foundation of connection within the Inner Fire Yoga community is inspiring. I am honored to extend this warm, welcoming environment! My intention is to cultivate a safe and supportive space for anyone and everyone to care for their bodies and minds—whatever that looks like each day.
When I’m not on my yoga mat or doing PhD research, you can find me teaching sailing on Lake Mendota, bullet journaling, or spending quality time with family and friends.
