Rachelle Hallberg

(she/her)

After moving to Madison in 2021, I would drive by the East studio on my way home from work everyday and think "I should really try a class there!" Eventually I signed up for the Saturday Inner Fire Flow thinking for some reason that hot yoga meant fast-paced yoga. I was in for a surprise but was immediately hooked. I was amazed at how it was slow and grueling at the same time. After sweating and shaking my way through the class I couldn't believe how much physical energy and mental clarity I had on my walk home!

I had very little yoga experience before starting at Inner Fire, but my mom has maintained a dedicated practice for close to 15 years. When I was in high school, she was so consistent that when I heard her lion's breath downstairs I knew it was just after 10 pm and time to get ready for bed. Now I understand her commitment. I feel my strongest and most confident when practicing yoga - even when I wobble or fall out of a pose. I credit that to the teachers and students who create such a comfortable, inclusive environment. Another benefit has been the focus on intentional breathing. When I find myself feeling stressed or anxious, I'll notice my breath has automatically become deeper and more regular - which certainly wasn't the case before I started doing yoga.

Right now, my favorite pose is embryo. The posture is humbling and restorative, plus it always feels great on my back. I tried crow for the first time last week and was surprised when it was easier than I thought! I look forward to trying more poses and getting out of my comfort zone this year.

Next month will be a year since my first class and I can't imagine ever stopping. I'm glad I finally signed up for a class after only driving by the studio - it was a good reminder to take a leap and try something new! I always look forward to Slow Flow with Ken and Hannah. Amelia's Wednesday Inner Fire Flow 60 is another highlight of my week! I'm so thankful for the community I've found here and look forward to a wonderful 2023 together.
